Enmity 9781743566213 Books Reviews
There's a lot I loved about Emnity. It's set in an exciting world where most of the population was wiped out sixty years ago. Only the strong survive and those remaining are at war with each other.
The characters are interesting. Nate and Hermia are taken and forced to train in a secret compound. Along with other teens, they face brutal training methods and it seems that everyone has a secret. Hermia is blunt and somewhat jaded by the world she has grown up in. As uneasy as she is about what is going on, she knows there is more to her captors. Nate is devastated by what has happened to his family but doesn't let that stop him from forming relationships within their odd and mixed up group and trying to be the leader others believe he can be.
I loved Hermia. She's bold and angry with a sarcastic streak that runs deep. Nate was an interesting contrast to Hermia and I enjoyed how the point of view switched between the two. It's great to read a novel where the two main characters don't fall in love with each other. There were times when their stories seemed to mirror each other too closely and it felt just a little too coincidental but otherwise I think they were a great pair to have narrate the novel.
These characters exist in a dangerous world and I liked how EJ Andrews described the setting. Magical rooms that display memories, orbs as weapons which run off human feeling - it's all pretty cool stuff.
But unfortunately I had one big problem with this novel. I felt lost. I never seemed to know what was happening or why people were doing certain things. I wanted to like this book but I found it hard to follow. There were big reveals as to people's identities but then after one person knew - it seemed like it was common knowledge. There needed to be more build up and integration between some events and reveals and the rest of the novel. I understand that a certain level of mystery is important to build the suspense and excitement. But even now after I've finished reading the book - I feel like I have no idea what was going on.
Conceptually amazing. Enmity is an exciting dystopian by debut author EJ Andrews. There's a lot going on with some great characters and very interesting family dynamics. I don't think I'll be continuing with the Enmity series but I think that Ms. Andrews is a talented writer and I'd definitely consider reading another novel by her.
When I first received Enmity and read the blurb I was quite excited to read it. It sounded fast paced, exciting and full of action.
It was anything but.
It started out pretty good. A prologue that drew me in with it's fast pace and a character in hysteria due to the impending solar flare that would change the world as she knows it. Abandoned by her parents and left to bunker down alone, hoping for survival.
We are then into the story. Following Hermia and Nate, alternating between their points of view, never to hear of the character from the prologue again. Which had me questioning what was the point of her? It didn't really make sense to me. I was hoping to find out what had happened to her but never did.
The rest of the storyline is fairly confusing. Hermia and Nate are kidnapped and taken to a compound to be trained and used to kill their captors enemy. There isn't much of an explanation as to who is running the new world or why and how the world got to the way it is. I found the whole story to lack depth and meaning. I couldn't fully invest myself into it because it was hard for me to establish a decent connection to it and it's characters. It really was a let down. The concept is great but the delivery needs work as well as more insight and definition.
I'm just going to go ahead and say it this was Just Another Generic Dystopian. I'm sad. I love dystopian. I snatch them up with my grimy little mitts and gobble them up. So I've read a lot. I hoped Enmity would add something to the dystopian noise. But nooooo.
My first "Huh?" moment came right at the prologue. We meet Saoirse. Lovely girl. Lovely name I can't pronounce. But don't worry! This is her only chapter! Yup, that's right, she's only here so we can witness the destruction of the world (not a spoiler, it's in the blurb) and then BOOM. We never hear from her again.
Okay, then.
My second "Huh?" moment came at the writing. I'm probably being too picky here, peoples, but some of the wording just...why?
Like this
"The differences between Bill and Will are very easy to see once you get over the fact that they are almost exactly the same."
Yeah, I'm getting a super clear picture there.
"It has been two days since my brain almost exploded and then I exploded at Winter yesterday."
Maybe this will change, because I DID read an un-final advanced-review-copy from NetGalley. But a lot of the writing is like that, sooo...maybe it's a style? It didn't click with me.
There were a bunch more "Huh?" moments after that. Like when random people got their heads blown off and then everyone went and had dinner and were hunky-dory. Or how all these children have been kidnapped because...to fight...someone? If they survive? I think? Or how everyone was "going to die" and "near death" and "won't live much longer" and "playing with death" and...
I get it. You're all on the brink of death! SO?? The phrase lost it's meaning because it was thrown at my face ALL the time.
By 50% I was asleep.
Let's talk characters, shall we? Characters are fun.
It's dual narrated (we're totally ditching Saoirse) by Nate and Hermia! I found their voices extremely similar and hard to differentiate at the beginning...but as the book went on, they developed marvellous personalities and opinions. Little babies all growin' up. Adorable. I like them.
But there were sooo many other characters. How am I supposed to remember their names? They felt a little flat (in my personal opinion) so I couldn't connect to anyone. Except the girl who cried all the time. I remembered her.
And while I liked Hermia, she was annoying as anything with her judging. She judged everyone and everything. Woman, calm down. She grumps about Nate kissing his girlfriend (they need priorities) and then turns around and kisses her dude (that's totally okay).
I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND THE REASONS BEHIND ANYTHING IN THIS BOOK.
The end.
Loved it. Looking forward to the next one.
