A psychometric and a weaver, both just learning how to use those powers. Team them with a several hundred year old vampire and an alliance that finds and disposes of dangerously magical objects. Now throw in a disgruntled bad guy with a demon at his control. All of this makes for an interesting tale.Deadly Curiosities takes place in modern day Charleston, with the focus of activity at Trifles and Follies, an antique/curiosity shop with an ulterior motive. The proprietor, Cassidy, knows that some objects hold resonance of the past and can relive events associated with them. Unfortunately, that experience often leaves her debilitated as she learns how to use it. Her assistant, Teag, has his own weaver magic, one aspect of which helps him to follow trails of information on the internet (a nice update to traditional magic forms).
And the shop has a "silent partner," a vampire named Sorren who has been in business with Cassidy's family for generations.
The plot has a nice blend of following the bread crumbs to a solution and fast-paced, gory fights. Cassidy and Teag try to understand their magic while thrust in the middle of crisis, sometimes with pushes from Sorren and his more-experience friends and others by experimentation and intuition. It's trial and error, but isn't that true of most real-life skills?
One of the best touches to the book is the setting. Yes, there's a disclaimer that specific locations are fictional, but the more general descriptions left me wanting to visit that city.
Overall I'd recommend this as a good read that left me wanting more in the series.

Deadly Curiosities Gail Z Martin Books Reviews
I enjoyed this tale immensely. The interaction of the three leads makes for an interesting team, and their various abilities are not the typical fare. A psychometric, a weaver, and a vampire working together to rid the world of possessed, haunted, or otherwise nasty items? Yes, please. I will say that Cassidy had to get bailed out a bit in this opening chapter of their story, but so did a certain Mr. Potter in his first few outings against badness. As Cassidy's powers developed through the story, she needed less and less help and eventually was holding her own pretty well in the fight against evil. Watching her come into her own was my favorite part of the story, and also, any story where the main character gets to use a spoon to kick some otherworldly evil butt, I'm in.
Great job, Gail. Keep 'em coming!
Oh, and RIP, Jimmy Redshoes... ;-)
Deadly Curiosities is a thrilling read and will, page after page, have you wondering “just what does go on beyond what my eyes are seeing”. Cassidy and Teag are relatable characters with believable story lines that I would like to see more of!
I enjoyed the multi layered old school and new school techniques for attempting to vanquish a foe and will without a doubt be doing more research on those aspects of the book. Having been to Charleston, I found the story very very easy to get swept into and enjoy. It makes me want to go back, retrace my steps and see the magic along side the mystery of the city.

Well written urban fantasy full of ghosts and scary stuff. Enjoyed Sorren, Taeg and Cassidy. The second one coming sounds even greater. Great read and kept me interested all through. It was interesting the setting of Charleston. An old city with it's own ghost stories. Highly recommend this one and book 2 coming out end of Dec. Great heroine lead with good friends to help her. Enjoyed her touch magic too. Looking forward to next one.
Over all, the story is great fun and this is an awesome new and different look at an Urban Fantasy. What attracted me to the book, other than Gail Z. Martin writing it, was that it was set in Charleston, SC, where I've lived for a number of years. The story and characters are great. There are new takes on magic and a place for the characters to all grow and change as they go along.
My only issue with it as someone who is lived in Charleston for a number of years was figuring out the placement of places and how some of the wording choices felt odd for Charleston. I had a real hard time trying to figure out where everything was suppose to be in Charleston, which mildly threw me out of the story. If you don't live in Charleston, it's not noticeable at all. But as someone who has lived here for a while, it feels odd to talk about the Old Navy Yard, when I've typically heard it called the Shipyard, Also rather distracting to try to figure out where the fictional places are located. It would have been nice if there were some nods to real places like say Black Market Minerals on Market Street.
Also mild pet peeve, but Cassidy and Teag go to a number of local (completely made up) food restaurants and the owners of all of the restaurants know them and they always order "their regular" thing, but we rarely find out what that regular thing is. Felt a little odd. Yes Charleston has a small town feel in a big city, but people do come and go in Charleston and it's not likely that the owner of an antique place knows the owner of every restaurant they frequent. Plus use of regular was a little annoying.
Over all, the unique story and characters and the great lack of guy inserted for random romance plot device made the book very enjoyable. I'd definitely read the next.
I hesitated buying this book because one reviewer described Cassidy, the female protagonist, as weak. Fortunately for me, I bought Buttons, a Deadly Curiosities Adventure which features her. I disagree with the reviewer that Cassidy is weak. She's very brave. She knows she can be overwhelmed by the strong emotions some objects have and yet she still uses her psychometry to help identify magical objects that need to be stored away from human contact.
I like the three main characters. They make a good team and I look forward to book 2, if there is a book 2.
