Characters: It's hard to find YA books with any diversity. And when you do, It's very stereotypical and really unrealistic. This book, on the other hand, is packed full of diversity. In fact, Trinity's student body reminds me of my high school class. Another great thing was that they spoke and acted realistically.
Plot: I don't want to give anything away; all I can say is that I was hooked and I felt all kinds of feelings. Although It's not hard SciFi, the SciFi elements are definitely there. And based on the ending, I know there's more to come. I can't wait for the next one!
All these factors made this book easy to read and hard to put down. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone interested in a diverse, fast paced, realistic, contemporary SciFi, YA book.

Outsiders eBook Tammy Ferebee Christina Frey M Leigh Thomas Shutt Amber Drappier Laura Hicks Reviews

Normally I do a little recap of the novel but I'm going to skip that as I don't want to give any spoilers away for this book. You need to read it for yourself. It's just an awesome read. The author's writing is easy to follow and flows great. The way she wrote her characters make them feel real.

I love that the author wasn't afraid to make her character different. Jaylen is an atheist and I think it's fantastic to see that in a YA book. Most people skip that or just don't mention religion but this author put it right there for everyone to see. So if you don't like that, don't read. But you'll be missing out. Not everyone is a Christian and it's so wonderful to see diversity!

Speaking of diversity, Jaylen is African-American and that is great to see! We need more books where like this! Jaylen is not the stereotypical type coming from a low income family or dealing with drugs. It's also a good book for the LGBT community because Indigo is bisexual.

Finally, the last thing I want to touch on is the sex scenes, pretty much all young adult books will skip over or give the smallest of details and it's always bothered me. I mean yes, I understand not wanting to let kids read that stuff but this is aimed at young adults. And most young adults are already exposed to all this. I mean come on, 16 and pregnant people!

I thought it was a nice balance, in no way was this book overloaded with sex, it fit perfectly with the story and you could see how much they loved each other. It wasn't some random hook up. Very tasteful.

More books should be like this! The risks this author takes and just how brave she is. Great job! Awesome sauce book and I just can't wait for more!

*I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review*
Amazing story-telling and narrative! I really wish there were more books like Outsiders for young adults out there. The plot is engaging, gripping, and provides (for once) a realistic perspective of today's young adult. Even as an adult I found the narrative compelling and have read it twice already! I purchased a copy for my younger sister this past Christmas and she can't stop talking about it! Well worth the read and the purchase.
I had high hopes for this novel. But while the overall premise is good, the writing is far too repetitive and pedantic for my taste.
Enjoyed this perspective of young love and the pain of life. Well written, slice of teenage rite of passage. Engages the feeling of loneliness and loss with the promise of love and a bright future.
I absolutely love this book!! I related to Jaylen so much throughout the book and I feel as though she will reach many others as well. I really enjoyed the writing style used. It kept be engaged and in the mind of the main character which I love. So descriptive that I could create vivid images within my own imagination. I found myself forcing myself to stay awake after some long days to read because I just had to know what was going to happen next! I also enjoyed that this book wasn't predictable, which books about teenagers can typically be, but here I gasped with shock multiple times while reading. I am dying to read the sequel and I hope it's coming soon )
The author did a great job of developing the teenage characters and creating nuanced relationships between them in this book. I also love the way she describes the... otherworldly characters and their physical attributes. Without spoiler-ing, I'll just say that the imagery really stuck with me and struck me as a powerful metaphor.
Outsiders was my first introduction to Ms. Ferebee's work, and I'm beyond impressed. I give this book 4.5 stars! YA/Sci-fi is a different sort of read for me, but different is good. I loved everything about the story. The characters were memorable. The story was intriguing. And the writing was on point! Can't wait for the sequel!!
