You never get an accurate picture of age in this book. I went from thinking Forest was in her 20s to maybe she was 16?? I'm a portal patrol ranger... or whatever and I carry around lovely weapons! Haha! Take that, Im a bad ass! Woot! I gotta mission, time for me to prove myself to the powers that be. Even though they hate me and I hate them right back! [*Enters said people that I hate*] I hate you... no I love you... touch me, kiss me... no! get away from me I hate you. *runs blindly into the woods* Oh why did I leave him, he's my soul mate!

Do you get where I'm going with this? The whole book though😒 The idea behind this story was good. I could get behind it... except for (please see above)

Forbidden Forest Volume 1 Tenaya Jayne 9780988275706 Books Reviews

And we have another winner! Another book that basically made me useless to the world and emotionally traumatized my little readerly heart. Highest marks to the author.

The plot
One of my absolute favorite things about indie books is that I’ve noticed that they tend to be more “to the point.” There’s none of this big, looping, long, boring string of Stuff before you get to the good parts. (No offense to traditional, some of my favorites are traditional.) Anyway, this book was action packed, romance packed, suspense packed, just over all packed.

One thing that did bother me was the omniscient perspective. There were parts where perspective was swapped through the course of a scene and I felt like it should have been more consistent or maybe broken up to make it clear who was talking.

The characters
Syrus and Forest are simultaneously adorable, hot, and hilarious together. Their banter and Syrus’ enthusiasm for human paraphernalia were so cute and I love the idea of the big bad vampire prince scrounging the pantry for Froot Loops, that’s not something you hear about every day.

I liked how their relationship was equal—there wasn’t one dominating the other. A lot of times—particularly in vampire romance—there’s the alpha male stuff. It’s fine every now and again, but it was refreshing to have a vampire love interest who’s a master in martial arts and also lovingly tells his girl what a bad@$$ she is.

There is a laundry list of characters who need to have an unfortunate meeting with Buffy or perhaps the Winchester boys in a back alley—Leith, Philippe, Christiana, Zephyre, it goes on—so there will be plenty of baddies to get their just desserts come the next books.

I very much want the next book, it’s just a matter of how soon I can get it. And the book after that. And the prequel novella. Really, I just want them all.
I wanted to like this book for its strong heroine but she annoyed me. She has a huge chip on her shoulder and it’s later revealed that she suffered major abuse and trauma. So her demeanor and outlook to life is quite understandable. She actually does some real self sacrificing and heroic things. Her love interest is blind but...not really. I don’t really get it. He’s a vampire but....not really. I dunno. The Who set up of Regia, I believe it’s cslled is hard to understand. And with all the multiple viewpoints, which I hate in a book, is tiresome and really unnecessary.
The end was a cliffhanger but sadly I wouldn’t be partaking. The whole Romeo and Juliet scenario is played out. (Yawn) Especially when their both powerless, super depressing. No thanks.
I read to be entertained and to forget about everything going on in my job, my mundane life, and the world as reported by the news. I enjoy stories that can grab my attention and imagination and run with them, kind of like a dog running across of field for the sheer joy of running. I read for the sheer joy of reading and mentally escaping for just a few moments of life. This is a jewel of a story, more enjoyable for me because I picked it at random without expectation because I did not know anything about the author. I love finding a new author or new series to follow in the fantasy genre and this one gets high marks from me. There were moments when I had tears in my eyes because I could feel the pain of Forest, the main female character, like when Cyris, the vampire she doesn't want to care about, reads her memories and discovers painful things she wants to keep hidden. Well written and a unique perspective and story line given it includes werewolves, vampires, elves, and other mystical creatures. This one easily passed my 10 percent rule - if I can't get into the story within the first 10 percent of the book then I'm probably not going to finish reading it. This one was out of the park well before that point. Great job.
What an amazing story full of suspense, betrayal, love, and definitely heart rending scenes. The prejudice against Forest has followed her throughout her entire life and to think that Shi is the only one that she feels truly loves her is enough to sadden even a hardened heart. What Leigh has done to her should mark him for death, and Syrus is being pulled from all sides. This plot is rich in the story being told, and the characters are nicely developed to keep you turning the page to see what is to happen next. The ending will floor you, but then it is a cliffhanger leading into the next book in the series. I can't wait to read "Forest's Fire"

The content is relatively benign so that it would qualify as YA appropriate. I give this story 5 Stars because it is just that good. If you like to read a full bodied story then this is one you'd want to read.
